Sunblock vs. Sunscreen: Which One Should You Pick?

When it comes to going outside and staying longer in the sun, good sunscreen is a necessity, especially in Bangladesh, where the weather is usually over 30 degrees or more. Last year, it was nearly 40 degrees in Dhaka. So, there’s always a need for sunscreen. However, many people buy it without knowing how to use it or understanding its benefits. Many people also don’t know that there is another option besides sunscreen, which is sunblock cream.

What is a sunblock cream?
Sunscreen cream blocks the sun's UV rays. Many people may be confused by this definition, thinking sunscreen works the same way. But that’s not entirely true.

According to Health.com, sunscreen and sunblock don’t work the same way, but they both protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Sunblock blocks UV rays by forming a physical shield. Sunscreen, on the other hand, absorbs UV rays before they reach your skin.

There are other differences as well. Sunscreen often dissolves into the skin, making it invisible after application. Sunblock, however, often leaves a white mask on the skin. Sunblock contains an ingredient called zinc oxide, which blocks UV rays. You will often see cricket players on the field with something white on their faces—that is sunblock cream.

How to choose the perfect sunblock or sunscreen?
Both sunblock and sunscreen have advantages and disadvantages. To get the most out of your sunscreen or sunblock, ensure the product has three essential qualities:

  • Broad-spectrum protection to guard against UVA and UVB rays,

  • SPF 30 or higher, and

  • Water resistance.

Also, choose one that suits your skin type. Everyone’s skin is different and can react differently to these products. Both sunblock and sunscreen come in various forms such as creams, ointments, lotions, gels, and sprays. Creams are better for dry skin, while gels are ideal for hairy areas.
