4 Tips for Choosing the Best Cat Food in Bangladesh

Cats are our best friends at home. These little creatures know exactly how we feel when we are down, and they come to us and cuddle us at the right moment. To repay them, we need to take care of our cats properly and feed them the right foods.

Here are some tips to help you find the best cat foods from your local market.

1. Cat's Life Stage

When choosing cat food, It's important to know which stage of life your cat is in. If it's a kitten, the cat food will be very different from that for adult cats.

Growing cats require more energy, calcium, and other essential nutrients for healthy development, according to Anicira.org. So, look for these nutrients on the packets.

However, it's best to visit a vet often to determine the best food, as there might be other issues to consider. For example, diets for spayed or neutered cats (that stay indoors) tend to be lower in calories to maintain a healthy body weight.

2. Dry vs. Wet Cat Food

There are two types of cat food normally available on the market: dry food and wet food.

Wet cat food is typically sold in cans. It is a great option for picky eaters. My cat loves it the most. These come with proper water content, which is beneficial for a cat's kidneys and may help with hydration. However, the problem with canned one is that it spoils faster and may get contaminated with bacteria.

The other option is dry food. According to many vets, dry food is also good for your cats. Dry cat foods often last longer at room temperature and are also a cost-friendly option.

Some dry kibbles have also been designed to help improve dental health, according to Anicira.org.

However, these dry foods contain very little water, so it’s important to always keep a steady supply of fresh water in the room.

3. Beware of Your Cat's Allergies

Many cat foods don't meet international standards. Some may contain materials that are allergic to cats. While allergies vary by cat, some ingredients are generally harmful to all cats.

According to Anicira.org, foods toxic to cats include onions, garlic, chocolate, caffeinated foods/beverages, grapes, and alcohol. However, this is not an exhaustive list, and it’s best to follow the rule: if you don’t know it’s safe, don’t feed it.

4. Check for International Standards

Like food standards for humans, such as BSTI in Bangladesh, there are certified standards for cat food to ensure it is made with the proper ingredients.
AAFCO sets nutritional standards for pet food in the United States, which are widely recognized internationally.

Example of Key Nutrient Requirements for Adult Cat Maintenance (AAFCO):

  • Protein: Minimum of 26% (dry matter basis)

  • Taurine: Minimum of 0.10% (dry matter basis)

  • Fat: Minimum of 9% (dry matter basis)

  • Calcium: Minimum of 0.6%, Maximum of 1.8%

  • Vitamin A: Minimum of 5000 IU/kg, Maximum of 750,000 IU/kg

So, next time you pick a packet of cat food from your supermarket, make sure it meets the appropriate amount of nutrients.
